BRICS and the Reawakening of Collective Economic Power

Talal Abu-Ghazaleh

The recent BRICS ministerial statement has revealed a moment of renewed clarity within the grouping. It expressed serious concern about unilateral trade and financial actions that distort markets and weaken trust, and reaffirmed a commitment to an open and rules based trading system and signaled interest in cross border payments in local currencies. These developments show that BRICS is rediscovering its purpose at a time when many nations feel the strain of unpredictable economic pressure. The resurgence reflects shared concerns that have grown stronger in recent years and a desire to restore balance in global governance.

As BRICS evolved, it began to articulate the concerns of nations that felt excluded from decision making. It called for reforms in global financial institutions, sought greater representation and pushed for a more balanced distribution of influence. The creation of the New Development Bank marked a shift from dialogue to institution building and showed that BRICS was prepared to support infrastructure and development in ways that traditional lenders had not. My experience across international institutions has taught me that legitimacy grows when institutions serve real needs and respond to the aspirations of their members.

Today BRICS faces a new challenge. Unilateral sanctions and escalating trade conflicts have created uncertainty across global markets, disrupted supply chains and undermined trust. These actions have reminded the world that economic power can be used in ways that weaken cooperation. The shared concerns expressed by BRICS finance ministers reflect a growing recognition that the global system must evolve. It must become more inclusive and more predictable and respect the principles that underpin the WTO.

The resurgence of BRICS is driven by necessity. Member nations understand that stability cannot be achieved when economic tools are used to pressure sovereign states. They understand that sustainable development requires fairness in trade and that global governance must reflect the realities of a multipolar world. This renewed energy offers an opportunity to build mechanisms that support resilience and innovation and to promote a system that values partnership over dominance.

BRICS can help shape a future that is more balanced and more just, strengthen the multilateral order and ensure that global governance reflects the aspirations of all nations. Its resurgence is a reminder that cooperation remains the most powerful tool available to the international community and that true leadership serves the collective good.
